Hollyford Track – Freedom Plus
From the Milford Road to Martins Bay
A moderate level of fitness is required.

- jetboat form Hokuri Hut to Pyke River confluence,

What to Bring:
First thing is make sure you have well worn good fitting boots or tramping shoes.
Suggested list of what to bring;
Pair of shorts, trousers.
Thick woolen or fleece top.
Thermal long johns and shirt.
Socks, underwear and handkerchief.
Small towel or flannel.
Warm hat and light gloves.
Waterproof coat with hood.
Favourite boots or walking shoes.
Pair of light shoes or sandals.
Pack with waterproof liner.
Small personal torch, water bottle.
Personal medicine, toilet bag
Insect repellent, sunblock.
Camera and film.
Some people like gaiters and others use walking sticks.
Freedom Walk customers need to add a sleeping bag and kitchen equipment to the list above except on the Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track where the huts have a full compliment of cooking and kitchen equipment available. Gas cookers are also provided on the Milford, Routeburn and Kepler tracks.
Accommodation in Te Anau at a backpackers is included in this package.
Accommodation on the trail is in public DOC huts. Bunk beds are generally available in the hut (first in first served so you may need a tent in busy times) no power, toilets are outside and no cooking facilities.
A moderate level of fitness is required. To enjoy your walk you need to be able to walk for 4– 8 hours over 10– 19 km ( 6 - 12 miles ) each day. The track is a mixture of natural bush and mountain tracks. You do need carry your own pack from hut to hut which is likely to be 7 to 12 kg. There can be some slips and tree fall which at times may make the going rough.
Children aged 17 and under and must be accompanied by an adult. Multi day tracks are not typically recommended for children under 10.
DAY 1: Arrive in Te Anau Stay the night at Lakefront Backpackers in Te Anau. Collect your DOC Hut tickets and trail map from Te Anau Lakefront Backpackers.
DAY 2: Te Anau, Milford Sound, Martins Bay, Hokuri Hut Scenic flight 30 minutes.
Walk 4 - 5 hours / 13.5 km ( 8.1 m)
Depart Te Anau at 9.30am from the Department of Conservation office for Milford Sound with Tracknet Shuttles. Fly with Air Fiordland at around 12pm to Martins Bay. Please be at the Milford Sound Airport 15 minutes beforehand. From Martins Bay airstrip a short walk to the Martins Bay Hut at the mouth of the Hollyford River is an option before you walk to Hokuri Hut.
DAY 3: Hokuri Hut, Alabaster Hut Jetboat 1/2 hour.
Walk 2 -3 hours. 10.5 km ( 6.3 m )
Enjoy a captivating jet boat across Lake McKerrow by-passing the infamous Demon Trail to the Pyke River confluence. Short walk to Alabaster Hut.
DAY 4: Alabaster Hut to Hidden Falls Hut
Walk 2 – 3 hours, 10.5 km ( 6.3 m )
Walk to Hidden Falls Hut past Little Home Falls and Little Homer Saddle.
DAY 5: Hiddens Fall Hut, Hollyford Road End, Te Anau
Walk 2 – 3 hours, 9 km ( 5.4 m )
Walk from Hidden Falls Hut to the end of the road for Tracknet shuttle back to Te Anau departs Hollyford Road end 1.00pm.
Departure Dates: From late October to April we have regular departures that depend on availability and schedule of services. Great Walks season is from 26th October 2009 to 26th April 2010 and 27th October 2010 to 26th April 2011.
Te Anau has daily shuttle services from Queenstown and Invercargill. We are happy to help with transport arrangements.
