Tongariro Expeditions: Winter Tongariro Alpine Crossing
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a challenging grade hike in summer and in winter this becomes even more so with the new challegne of snow and ice. Boots, cramp-ons and hiking poles are given to you as well as an information sheet and map to help you along the way. You are fitted for your cramp-ons in transit and taught how to put them on. However, on the mountain you are given no assistance. Therefore we only go up when the weather conditions and track conditions are stable and safe. It is essential to call the day before to check this.
If we are not going up you will be offer the alternative track of the Tongariro Alpine Traverse as a great option as it is not exposed to the extreme weather and ice that the crossing has. You are still hiking in an alpine region with stunning views on days that the crossing is not possible.
